2008 summary

I don't think I did this last year, but I did at at the end of 2006.

Significant events in 2008, in roughly chronological order, were:

I became certified as a diver

I fell completely headover heels in love with an awesome boy

I started learning German

I gave away, sold, stored most of my posessions and moved to the other side of the world

I worked for Moodle HQ for 3 months

I lived in London for 6 months

I visited Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Austria

I gave my first keynote speech at a conference

I snowboarded for the first time

All in all, it was a pretty crazy year. My life kind of turned upside down and I found myself to be very often far removed from anything resembling a comfort zone. I expect 2009 to be pretty crazy as well. Not being one for New Year's resolutions involving big unrealistic changes, I tend to think more about what I will focus on in the coming year. In 2009, I expect I will:

Move to Switzerland (more on this later once it becomes official)

Learn enough French to be able to survive in Fribourg, and continue learning German

Those two are kind of big enough on their own to justify not adding things like "be nicer to puppies", but I guess the other thing is that in 2008 I found myself slowly tearing down many walls I had built up around myself. It sometimes feels like I'm allowing chaos in, or destroying my ability to be able to control my life as much, but all in all I think it's a good thing, and something I want to continue doing in 2009.

tell me if you are lost in deep valleys, i have no direct contacts in fribourg but zuerich and some more scattered around the german speaking area of switzerland. no kiwis though but open minded swiss guys (kind of hard to find from time to time).

Hi Nicolas,

Thanks a lot! I knew you lived nearby (either Nico C or Valery told me) but I didn't realise it was Fribourg itself.

I'm hiding out in Zürich at the moment but going to New Zealand in a few weeks, and sometime after that will be moving to Fribourg... sometime in February I guess.

My brother said Switzerland and swiss people are incredibly boring - everything shuts at like 8pm and no one goes out / has a drink after work... snoring!
But beautiful scenery! And apparently only like 2% tax, so if you can live and earn there you will be sweet
